Which means more money, more vacation time, and more health/dental benefits. My hours are still not remotely regular though; I hope they find a replacement for my old position so I can work in the 9-to-5 range instead of 12-to-8.

Gaming: I beat Super Paper Mario and Paper Mario, unlocking stuff in Mario Party 8 and am at the end of Zelda Twilight Princess. I also just bought a DS Lite with Brain Age 2 to combat the "brain drain" I've been feeling of late. Adam let me watch most of his playthrough of Bioshock, which is an excellent game and definitely deserves Game of the Year over Halo 3. I also bought the three Mega64 DVDs, and they're really funny. My favorite skits are Katamari Damacy, Feel The Magic, and the Fifth Freedom ads.

Toys: Adam gave me my Christmas present early: an Ipod Classic! My first mp3 player. I transferred all my music and even bought my first Itunes album, Juan Luis Guerra's Fogarate.

Bad News: I've been to two wakes over the past few months; I lost my Tio Joaquin and Adam lost his grandmother.

Future Plans: Adam and I have made plans to go to New York, possibly in early December, and Las Vegas in January! I can't wait to wear my little black dress and play blackjack in the City of Sin. I'm not a gambler at all, but I want to play a few games just to say that I did it.

(Audio) Book Report

I bought the audiobooks of BoA and BoT.

BoA: Very well-done. Young Atrus, young Catherine, and old Anna all did a great job. This Gehn was a little more fiery-tempered and can't compare with John Keston's portrayal, but he holds his own well. It was abridged, so they didn't keep the line about Atrus seeing the rain in the Cleft/foreshadowing of the Star Fissure, but I was happy they kept my favorite line from Gehn, "So my grandsons can be lords of a million worlds!" It made me pleased that after all this time, I still found myself waiting with anticipation for the audio to reach certain points in the book.

BoT: A disappointment. While BoA was abridged, this one was super-abridged, to the point that the epic feel of the novel (and D'ni itself) was lost. Also, the acting in this one was quite poor. Young Anna sounded weird (she suffered from what I call the Catherine Curse--not being able to maintain a consistent accent), young Aitrus sounded too young, and Veovis was trying waaay too hard to come across as a villain. You can't buy that anyone would be charmed by this mover-and-shaker with his portrayal. The best actor was A'gaeris--he came across as the most natural, and was appropriately vicious and desperate at the end. It's a shame he didn't have more to say!

If you give a Sorceress a job...

...she'll get her very own checking account and ATM/debit card.

...and then it will dawn on her that she's no longer broke and also can buy things online without having to beg her mother for her credit card.

..and then she'll buy an Atrus action figure on ebay and consider buying the Saavedro one next payday and then she'll open up an Amazon account and yikes what a terrible application of one's hard-earned money.

Not really--the figure was less than $10.

I have never been a big spender (not just because I didn't really have the cash much of the time), and I'm not worried that my newfound financial freedom is going to change that. It's just that the feeling of having my own money that no one else can touch is so rewarding. Besides, it's my birthday on Monday, so Atrus with his raincoat and little Releeshahn linking book is a present to myself. Well, that and the Nintendo Wii I bought last week. :)

I've been working at my new job for a few weeks now. I'm a clerk at a mental health facility. My official title is a long way to say "receptionist", but I also do a lot of filing and data entry. It gets very busy during my shift in the afternoon/evening, and they threw a lot at me the first few days, but everyone has been really nice and they say I'm doing a great job. And it's definitely better than being unemployed!

02/19/07

Last night, I finished Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase For Lincoln's Killer. It's a great book. I'm not very knowledgable about American history before the 20th century (I love learning about the turn of the century and the Roaring Twenties), so almost all of this book was a revelation to me. I had just assumed that Booth was captured in the theater box immediately after he shot Lincoln. I had no idea he escaped and sent the nation on a 12-day manhunt. I also had no idea that he was the leader of a group of conspirators who, if they had succeeded, would have also wiped out the most important members of the cabinet.

There's next to nothing about Lincoln apart from brief glimpses of his final happy days in office and his final evening on earth. You learn far more about Booth and a bit about how his co-conspirators fared. There's a picture of him in the first chapter--what a handsome devil he was. It's so strange, but while I definitely don't like the racist prima-donna little jerk, I now have a morbid fascination of him. Maybe it's just my, umm, predilection for villains. :( I'm not the only one (and this is so bizarre/horrifying)--apparently there's a group of Southerners who to this day celebrate the death of Lincoln and raise a toast to "Our Brutus." I know Lincoln wasn't the perfect president (he suspended habeas corpus during the War and jailed accused Confederate sympathizers without evidence or trial), but come on!!

But what bummed me out after reading the book was the missed opportunity I had. In high school (pre-9/11), the senior trip was to Washington D.C. I had lots of fun, but the program we went through there was more focused on current politics than the historical aspects. And the times we did go to a museum, we were rushed through them (we only had 30 minutes to view the Smithsonian!). What kills me was that I was in Ford's Theater, but I didn't get to see anything! Oh yeah, I saw Bye Bye Birdie, but I didn't get to see the museum downstairs. I didn't get to see the Deringer and bowie knife Booth used to attack Lincoln and Major Rathbone, or his compass (if he knew how to read a compass correctly, he might have succeeded in escaping justice), or see his diary. I didn't even get to see or go near The Box either!

If I get the job I'm applying for (the job interview today went well I think), I'm gonna save up my money and vacation time for a week in D.C., take my sweet time and let all the history just wash over me in a great and constant wave.

"Frailty, thy name is BINGLES"

For the love of Atrus, is it Thursday yet?!? The wait is killing me! I've been playing WoW again to take the edge off. I've given up playing my mage Schalazeal. A few months ago, I rolled a warrior named Nuhdahtahv (D'ni for "disaster") on a whim, and found her to be much more fun. It's great to blow through quests that gave me trouble before because now I can actually take some damage. Mining is also much more fun than picking herbs for alchemy. It's also fun to travel with Adam's Level 70 hunter--we ran through the Barrens for a warrior quest last night, and no Horde dared to touch me.

I also got my haircut today, because I finally landed a job interview! Unfortunately, the interview is scheduled for Thursday afternoon--I wanted to set aside the day just for Uru. Plus we don't know exactly what time MOUL is launching either.

Glad To Move On

It's official: I am now a college graduate! I got my diploma in the mail minutes before the DRC Forums Gathering. Even though I wish the event had gone more civilly, it was hard to feel too down with my degree in my lap. I'm just so glad to get it. I figured I wouldn't receive it until some point this month, but I kept having nightmares of somehow not graduating because I forgot to pay a library fine or something small. Reading horror stories of people not graduating because they didn't fulfill all requirements despite their own advisors reassuring them they were all set definitely didn't help either!

Now that I can stop worrying about getting my Bachelor's, I can devote all my worry to getting a job! I've been home since Christmas and no one's been interested. I REALLY want to avoid retail if I can help it; I've been there once and have no desire to go back.

Despite the job hunt, life's been pretty good. Adam recently got a job at a phone company in Quincy Point that he really likes. We even attended the holiday office party together, and I've seen his office. He looks really cute as a businessman. We've been hanging out with our friends on our typical Thursday Night Out. We've been playing a lot of Wii games, like ricing up cars in Need for Speed Carbon, playing Wii Sports, and wondering at the weirdness of Wario Ware Smooth Moves and Rayman Raving Rabbids. Tonight we admired Phung's awesome new widescreen monitor, and played a lot of Mahjong (real Mahjong, not the "matching pairs" Mahjong that I was addicted to). Gamewise, I finished Sam & Max Episode 3, and am now plodding through Final Fantasy III for the DS so I can borrow Gracie's copy of Phoenix Wright: Justice for All (I LOVE that series).

As for Uru, I like how they've spread out the release of existing content in order to keep people in the game instead of just waiting for launch (6 days!!) Regarding Cate as a possible(?) foil, that's fine, I just can't wait for the real villain (Destruction is Coming, y'know). I said it before in MOUL's official forums, but I want a bad guy who will make me think twice about being somewhere alone. It would be a nice change of pace to play off of someone who's not DRC-related.

This might sound weird, but when Cyan says destruction, I want some destruction all up in this cavern. Cyan doesn't do earth-shattering events often at all, so whatever they decide to do, it will resonate all the stronger. Maybe it will be an earthquake, a villain who can match Yeesha's abilities, a dramatic death, a dramatic return--heck, maybe all of the above is in the cards eventually. But whatever we face in the future, I'm sure we'll be able to find a way and make a home.

I Hate The Flu

Oh man, I've felt terrible today. Adam's father and sister have been sick with the flu since Saturday. Of course, Adam didn't tell me they were feeling bad, but I figured I would escape the illness.

Oh, how wrong I was.

Fever, aches, shakes, and running to the bathroom every half-hour. Sorry to be gross, but I've been literally expelling nothing but water out of my body since 4am. Turns out it's what they call a norovirus or something, similar to the string of cruise ship flus that hit the industry a few years ago. You have to keep drinking water, only to throw it back up a few minutes later. This obviously makes you very dehydrated, but you don't really want to drink, cuz you know what's gonna happen. Although, water has never tasted so good until today!

This is the worst I've felt in like 10 years. And now Adam is sick too. He made it to work okay, only to come right back home an hour later. Apparently this thing had been hitting his office co-workers as well. He played some WoW, only to find later that in his sick haze he accidentally vendored his Giantstalker's Epaulets. Hopefully he can get them back from a GM.

I haven't eaten yet today, and I haven't taken Tylenol for my fever because I'm afraid I won't be able to keep it down. Truth be told, I am feeling a bit better (otherwise I wouldn't be writing this entry). My fever has gone down slightly, and I haven't been sick since 2:30pm. I've been sleeping on and off, and have watched a lot of Reno 911 and Star Trek episodes (you know I'm not feeling well when I actually decide to willingly watch Voyager and Enterprise).

So if you don't see me in Uru the next few days, now you know what's up. I'm also not looking forward to the possibility that my mother and brother are gonna get it as well, and neither are they.

[Insert Clever Title Here]

I got to play the Wii during Thanksgiving Break. My friends and I played lots of Wii Sports and Excite Truck. Adam also showed me Madden and Zelda, and I bought him Red Steel. I am definitely gonna buy a Wii when I come home and get a job. Speaking of jobs, there are two places in Quincy that are looking for secretary/front desk workers, one of which is very flexible with hours. Flexibility would be great for me to accomodate auditioning.

Today, my group performed our lighting project. The project was you had to pick one song from any musical (around 5 minutes long) and program all the lighting for it while you found actors to perform it. We did pretty well seeing as we waited until the last minute to work on it! It was hard because one of the group was busy on the crew for the department's production of Christmas Carol.

Anyway, we chose the song "The Ballad of Guiteau" from the musical Assassins (which is now my favorite musical). The play is about all the successful and failed assassins of American presidents: Giteau who killed Garfield, Czolgosz who killed McKinley, Booth who killed Lincoln, etc. A touch twisted, but with Sondheim behind the music, you can't help but love it.

We were fast with figuring out the light plot and color schemes on Sunday, but by Monday night we still didn't have any actors to play the two roles of Guiteau and the Narrator/Balladeer! We kept calling people, but just like us, every other student is running into their own crunch times. While thinking of anyone that could be available, Dan and I both said at the same time, "Oh my god, Alec would be perfect for Guiteau!!" We were so lucky that he was able to get out of shop hours long enough to rehearse and perform today. But we still couldn't find anyone to play the Balladeer.

Now Penny (our professor) tends to frown on people in the group performing in their own project; she wants you to work on the lighting not the acting. But we were in a pickle, and seeing as we had three people in the group as opposed to only two like the others--I got to play the Balladeer! With this project, you don't have to sing if you don't want to--you can lip sync or just pantomime along. But seeing as this was my last performance in UMass, and I knew all the words from listening to nothing else but the soundtrack the entire weekend, I decided that I was gonna belt it out.

Here's a video of the song that we did (from the Broadway revival in 2004):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLGzwCva9nQ

Anticipation

Wii hype and media is starting to hit (only 15 more days until launch!). The more I see of Wii Sports, Channels, Virtual Console games, and Zelda trailers, the more I want it. I won't be getting it at launch, but now I'm chomping at the bit for demo kiosks to come their way to Amherst. Must...try...Wii... Because even if Adam gets it on the 19th, I'm not coming home until Thanksgiving Break. At least Wii anticipation is keeping me from going stir-crazy about Uru Live anticipation!

On school matters, my lighting class finished our journal entry reenactment projects. My partner (who comes from my hometown and I went to middle and high school with his older brother) and I performed my entry on the Colbert Report. We got the theme song, he performed his own monologue, I used the light board without screwing anything up, and the class loved it, even the few who don't know who Colbert is. But now we're starting THE LIGHTING PROJECT OF DOOM. Doom, I tell you!! Dooooooooom.

By the way, did I say I'll be graduating this semester? And similar to waiting for Uru Live's release, I've been waiting for the price/date announcement of the Wii with bated breath. And apparently, so has the entire Internet.

Nintendo is having a gaming conference over the next couple of days. Tonight is the Japanese one, then tomorrow morning is the American one. But I've never been good with patience when it comes to videogames. I've been sitting at my computer since 8pm, having fifty windows open to every gaming news site I can think of, and hitting the refresh button over and over and over again. One site, GWN, claimed to have live blog coverage of the Japanese event, and it was the one site that I really focused on.

Oh GWN. They covered an event alright: a press conference...from last year. They had no clue until 20 minutes in. I've never laughed so hard. I'm crying on the inside, but I still see the humor of it all.

So no one knows when the real event is happening, or if the media is even allowed into the conference at all. But here I am, still F5ing game forums like a moron. Nope, last night was my 5-year high school reunion. It was held at Waterworks in Squantum. It was nice to see some people that I haven't seen since graduation. It wasn't too emotional though; all the people that I was close to in high school I still regularly hang out with. So it was mostly catching up with acquaintances (I dug up my yearbook to help jog my memory). Obviously, seeing it's only been 5 years, not too much has changed with everyone, as all of us are either done with school or finishing up. The 10-year reunion should be much more interesting.

While I wouldn't say the night was fantastic (the dance floor wasn't fully opened because of a bachelorette party going on at the other end of the club, and half my group were fuddieduddies that didn't want to dance), I had a nice time. See, I was very shy in high school (oh wait, I'm still shy), and I honestly didn't know if people would even remember me. But quite a few did, so I'd consider the evening a success.

It brought up quite a few memories: MCAS, dances, proms, playing tag during the football games, the fun teachers, the arsons and the post-Columbine bomb scares (Good times! No, seriously, they were. They got us out of school for the day and I have fond memories of spending time with my friends). Before high school, I was a shy loner who only had a friend or two. But my days at North Quincy High was the first time I had an entire group of people I could call good friends, so it was a happy time for me instead of the angst-ridden hell it is for a lot of people. Also Adam made it one of the happiest times of my life.

And going off on a completely different tangent, what in God's name is up with that Nick Jr. show Lazytown?? I watched it On Demand on a whim, and I was speechless. The puppets are creepy as hell, and the humans aren't much better. I knew it was popular, but I couldn't figure out why. At least until I saw the actor who plays the superhero (pic on the left--he's got ice-blue eyes and a sweet Icelandic accent). Now I know why moms are so eager to watch this show with their kids! (WARNING: The songs are too damn catchy; you will hum The Cake Song until the day you die.)

Anyway, my mom is off in Aruba with my aunt and her family, so Dad is housesitting with us this week!

And who else is anxious for Tuesday to arrive?! A meeting with Rand is great enough (I have no idea what to ask him), but this extra surprise has got me excited!

Dilly Dally Shilly Shally (Insomnia!)

I finally got around to seeing Final Fantasy Advent Children, making me the last person on the Internet to do so. It was okay, but like Chinese food: delicious at the time, but 15 minutes later your tummy is unsatisfied. It's pure fanwank, but it's still fun. Hey remember when Tifa (my powerhouse character) kicked butt? Square sure doesn't! And this film had waaay too much emo-Cloud (pop the collar) and too few Turks and Red XIII. Oh well, it had Sephiroth, and I do loves me some One-Winged Angel (oh shush, he was my very first bishonen). I also saw the extra that summarized the game with its cutscenes, which was nice because I didn't remember any of the plot. Oh god, that game's graphics have not aged well AT ALL. I'll just have to wait for the possible remake for the PS3 that I can't afford.

Cars was cute. Above Toy Story 1 and 2 and Bug's Life, but below Incredibles, Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc (my fave Pixar film).

For her upcoming 50th birthday, my mom is getting an early present: a trip to Aruba in July from my aunt. Which means that Dad will be housesitting for that week! Yay!

Thinking of starting up Baten Kaitos again. I didn't get very far last time. I need something to prevent me from refreshing my email every 2 minutes for a possible Uru Live beta invite. (Spoiler Warning: I already know this plan will not work)

If anyone reading this has Comcast On Demand, check out the masterpiece Sidekicks under the Free Movies section. Full of 1980s and Chuck Norris. It is the broke man's Karate Kid. And yes, this movie is still hilarious even if you're sick to death of the Chuck Norris Internet meme that will not die. (Recommendation: Watch this with friends at 3am for maximum funny)

I need to pick up some DVDs this summer. I think I'll just suck up the 160 bucks (I hate you HBO) and buy the Carnivale Season 1 and 2 sets. And get the Strangers With Candy series set and the Stella set. Speaking of SWC, can't wait to finally see the movie!

Fun With Anagrams

My name Samantha = Mana Hats!

...The end of the semester cannot come fast enough.

Nintendo Cut It Out

Seriously, stop posting awesome announcements at E3, I'm trying to get to sleep!

--Smash Bros Brawl with Solid Snake as a playable character
--new Phoenix Wright game

I am awash with sheer glee. Yes, I am one of those people who are playing only because all of my friends (the guyfriends anyway) are playing. Another plus is that I'm on my boyfriend's family's account, so I'm not paying.

WoW is admittedly fun in very small doses, but I honestly can't be bothered playing for hours at a time grinding and waiting for an item to drop. It wasn't fun in Asheron's Call, and it isn't fun now. Prettier, but not fun. I suspect that I would have even less fun playing if I didn't have friends to roll with, because, let's face it, most WoW players are jerks. Uru has kinda spoiled me--I'd almost forgotten that friendly helpful people in MMOs are the exception and not the norm. I'd be tempted to play on the role-playing servers to offset "endless fetch quest" boredom, but it would only serve to remind me that Warcraft (no offense) is C-grade fantasy. It wouldn't satisfy my craving for story that I've had since Uru.

Anyway, I only play once in a blue moon, but if you're in Bleeding Hollow, say hi to Schalazeal the human mage of Guild Fignuts!

Truthiness Hits The White House. Hard.

There are few people that I admire. I have people who I respect for their beliefs or actions, or just like for their talents, but complete and total admiration from me is rare. Here's a short list:

1. Joan of Arc
2. Calamity Jane
3. Edward R. Murrow
4. New addition: Stephen Colbert

On CSPAN they aired the White House Correspondents Dinner. Very few people watch it; just boring speeches, mild attempts at humor, politicians patting each other on the back, polite smiles and ends with halfhearted stand-up by a selected comedian. Tonight was different.

I don't know who booked Stephen. Either the guy had never even seen The Colbert Report, or thought it wasn't a parody, or possibly booked him for this specific purpose. Regardless, the man is going to be out of a job, and Colbert is going to need a food-taster from now on.

I'll be frank--Colbert (who was in character from his show) bombed. Hard. Not because he wasn't funny, mind you. True, his actual show is funnier, but I know he must've been nervous. I would be too if I had utterly slammed the entire Bush administration and the press for the horrible job it's been doing for the past five years.

It was incredibly awkward (yet satisfying) to watch none of the audience laughing as Colbert nailed the room full of self-important politicians and sycophantic press. And Colbert didn't falter, he kept on going to the bitter end. He looked the President right in the eye and showed him no mercy. For once, Bush couldn't just sit in the Oval Office and hide from the news and only hear what he wanted to hear. He had to sit there and take all the crap that many Americans are furious about and want to scream at him but will never get the chance.

I don't know if this will have any impact on the administration or the nation's opinion of it (who watches CSPAN really?), but I hope it does; Internet word-of-mouth does travel fast. Find the clip and watch it. For me, my little Colbert Crush has changed into true admiration.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://dnisorceress.blogspot.com/2006/04/truthiness-hits-white-house-hard.html' title='Truthiness Hits The White House. The pain goes from really annoying to utter agony every day or two. I can't concentrate on my schoolwork, and I'm barely sleeping and eating. Tylenol just isn't doing the trick anymore. I finally convinced my dentist to stop "consulting" and "looking" and start "doing his job". So I'm scheduled for emergency surgery on the 17th. It's gonna probably hurt like hell afterwards, but it can't be any worse than what I'm feeling now. And did I mention I have no dental insurance? *sob*

I wonder if one can have dreams while under anesthetic? If it's possible, I want an extremely trippy Myst dream. I want to think Atrus is giving me a tour of Ae'gura and Cyan Worlds and showing me brand new Ages while I'm in my unconscious haze.

With my luck, I'd probably dream of Achenar torturing me by ripping out all of my teeth with rusty pliers.

Some good news...I'm coming home for the surgery, so I get to spend time with friends and family on Easter weekend. I also successfully picked almost all of my classes for my final semester at college (still waiting on word from the Costume Design teacher). For the Costuming portion in Beginning Design, I got an A and I get to keep the lovely apron I made. And seeing as I'll most likely be out of commission for a few days after the surgery, I get to stay home in Quincy to recuperate and have it count as an excused absence, and Mom will drive me back to school, so no smelly Peter Pan bus ride back for me.

Also, I turned 23 on Sunday.
